My Meter Exchange Project
In the coming years, Clark Public Utilities will deploy a new metering system. The project will exchange all electric meters at homes and businesses in Clark County and update existing water meters for Clark Public Utilities water customers.
The current Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system has served our customers reliably for over 20 years, but like all technology, it is nearing the end of its effective service life. The existing AMR meter fleet is aging, and we’re now facing challenges in maintaining these systems. Replacement parts and new AMR meters are increasingly difficult and costly to source as manufacturers have shifted their focus to newer technologies. It is becoming increasingly impractical to continue supporting AMR infrastructure long-term.
By upgrading to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), we’re investing in modern technology that will serve customers for decades to come. AMI meters offer significant improvements in operational efficiency compared to AMR systems. While AMR meters require drive-by reading, AMI meters communicate consumption data automatically and in near real-time through a wireless network. This means faster detection and response to issues and the ability to provide customers with detailed energy information which can help you manage your usage.
My Meter Exchange ensures continued safe, reliable service into the future while also taking advantage of modern capabilities to maintain and boost operational efficiencies and customer experience.
Timeline & Status Updates
Preliminary infrastructure upgrades to support the My Meter exchange project are scheduled to being in the second half of 2026.
This work will happen primarily on utility-owned properties such as substations or in existing utility rights-of-way. This initial infrastructure work will vary by location and includes installation of industry standard utility equipment. Work typically involves replacing an existing utility pole with a taller pole and installing communications equipment. In some cases a new pole may be installed alongside an existing one.
You may receive a postcard from us letting you know we’ll be working in your area if this work is scheduled to happen near your home. If your property is connected to or near one of these areas, a utility design engineer may reach out to you directly beforehand to discuss further details.
