Stream Steward Program Seeks Volunteers to Help Save Salmon in Clark County
Clark Public Utilities Now Accepting Applications for Autumn Restoration Effort
VANCOUVER, WA – August 3, 2011 – Clark Public Utilities’ StreamTeam is accepting applications now through September 1 for its fall Stream Steward session. Selected volunteers participate in eight hands-on workshops and one day of service-learning before providing 45 hours of service toward community efforts to save salmon.
The Stream Steward opportunity is open to all age groups, backgrounds and experience levels. Individuals dedicated to community service with an interest in local environmental stewardship are encouraged to apply.
“Our Stream Stewards are an integral part of our Clark Public Utilities’ StreamTeam efforts, providing leadership and expertise in the field throughout the year,” said Jeff Wittler, Clark Public Utilities environmental resources manager. “This program is part of our investment in building a community that’s educated and motivated around issues of stream health and salmon safety.”
In addition to volunteering, our Stewards have ongoing continuing education opportunities including winter twig identification, wildlife monitoring and rain management classes.
“Past Stream Steward graduates are our biggest recruiters because of their enthusiasm and appreciation for the program,” said Ashley King, StreamTeam coordinator. “Many of our Stewards return year after year to participate in restoration projects – it’s a strong community of people committed to healthy watersheds in Clark County.”
The fall Stream Steward program kicks-off September 24 and includes six Saturday sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and three Tuesday workshops from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
