Protect our supply
To effectively protect our supply of high quality drinking water we have to work to maintain or improve both the quality and quantity of our water resources.
Our groundwater protection program for the Salmon Creek basin, where most of our supply wells are located, is a model in the state. We work with local property owners and government agencies to improve the water in the creek and its tributaries.
The Salmon Creek project is an extensive, long-term rehabilitation of Salmon Creek. Work along the creek and its tributaries has included planting trees to improve shoreline habitat and building fences on farms to keep livestock away from the stream.
Our employees and members of the public have planted more than 500,000 trees, built more than 68,000 feet of streamside fencing, and reared and released more than 350,000 steelhead and trout since this program began in 1990. The utility was honored in 2001 when Clark County presented one of its first Sammy awards to the utility. The award, one of several presented, was to recognize outstanding efforts to protect salmon.
We offer several educational programs in schools and throughout the
community on groundwater protection. And we provide information to all
about ways everyone can help protect our water resources.
