Stream Stewards
Ever wonder what happened to all the salmon that lived in Salmon Creek?
Are you a concerned citizen of Clark County and interested in learning about our local environment?
Clark Public Utilities’ StreamTeam offers the Stream Stewards program for people just like you! This program was built specifically for concerned citizens interested in local flora and fauna who can commit to bettering their community through 45 hours of "learn and serve" time. The Stream Stewards program allows Clark County residents to learn about local environmental topics through professional level, hands-on workshops.
Tuition is free of charge. However, participants are asked to complete 45 hours of volunteer time through a variety of different activities with the StreamTeam or through one of our partners in their first year. There is a pay back opportunity for everyone’s interests!
The goal of this eight-week course is to increase awareness about geology, hydrology, riparian and wetland habitat, wildlife (i.e. birds, fish, mammals and reptiles), water quality and native plant restoration. Stewards are also able to enjoy social events and increase their knowledge through continuing education workshops offered throughout the year. Previous continuing education topics have included winter twig identification, bird call identification and bioengineering.
The Stewards receive hands on experience, the opportunity to interact with like minded individuals and a chance to teach their skills to others. Upon completion of the workshops, Stewards understand what makes a healthy habitat, how societies affect habitat and have increased awareness of the critical components of a healthy environment.
