Building operator certification
Building Operator Certification offers a solid education for taking care of buildings. It covers a broad base of information and is helpful for those entering the operation or building engineering field.
Level I certification requires 80 hours of training and project work in building systems maintenance. Courses included are Building Systems Overview, HVAC Systems and Controls, Facility Electrical Systems, Indoor Air Quality, Maintenance and Related Codes, Efficient Lighting Fundamentals and Energy Conservation Techniques.
Level II certification includes 50 hours of training and elective coursework in equipment troubleshooting and maintenance. Courses included are Preventive Maintenance & Operations, Advanced Electrical Diagnostics, HVAC Troubleshooting & Maintenance, HVAC Controls & Optimization, Advanced Indoor Air Quality and Motors in Facilities.
So far over 575 building operators in Washington and Oregon have completed Level 1 and/or II certification. The training is available through the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council.
The classes are recommended for for anyone who's contemplating entering the field of building management, as a refresher course for those who have been working in the field for some time and for those who are looking for a promotion. Just about anyone who is operating a building will benefit.
